CAPE COD RTA AWARDED $14.6 MILLION GRANT FOR LOW-EMISSION BUSES

July 30, 2024

HYANNIS, MA- Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) Administrator, Thomas S. Cahir, Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Regional Administrator Peter Butler, and Congressman William Keating, will be hosting a joint press event at the Hyannis Transportation Center to announce the CCRTA has been awarded a $14.6 million FTA Low and No Emission Vehicle (Low-No) Grant for Bus and Bus Facilities programs. This funding is part of nearly $1.5 billion in competitive grants awarded to 117 projects across 47 states and territories, resulting in approximately 1,100 new buses on the nation’s streets.

“We are pleased to provide federal support to CCRTA to invest in its bus system, which provides important connections for Cape Cod residents and visitors,” said FTA Regional Administrator Peter Butler. “The new hybrid electric buses will help CCRTA reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and meet a goal to transition to a fully electric fleet. As it does so, CCRTA will provide training for workers to develop the skills necessary to maintain buses powered by new technology.”

“The CCRTA keeps Cape Cod moving, and these new electric buses will ensure that those who rely on the CCRTA can get to work, appointments, and errands on modern equipment that reduce emissions, all while creating local jobs” said Congressman Bill Keating. “As Cape Codders, we know that our environment is our greatest asset – this grant helps us to protect that, and I express my sincere thanks to the FTA and the Biden-Harris administration for supporting CCRTA’s work.”

CCRTA will use the grant funding to purchase low-emission Hybrid buses to replace aging diesel buses and to establish a worker training program to develop the skills necessary to maintain these new vehicles. This grant will enhance transit service for the entire community while creating jobs.

“We are excited to receive these funds from the FTA,” said CCRTA Administrator Tom Cahir. “The new low-emission buses will significantly enhance our transit system, providing cleaner, more efficient service and contributing to a healthier environment.”

Please join us in marking this significant achievement and learning more about the positive impacts this grant will bring to our transit system at the press conference:
