Public transportation is on the rise in Bourne. Bus service in and around town will increase as of early next week.
Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority Administrator Thomas S. Cahir announced that, beginning Tuesday, September 8, bus service frequency in the Buzzards Bay and Sagamore area will increase from seven to 18 times a day in each direction. The enhanced, higher-frequency service is being called the Buzzards Bay Connector.
“This equates to bus service at all stops every 20 to 40 minutes throughout the majority of the day, as opposed to every 90 minutes in the past,” Mr. Cahir said.
In addition, he said the bus service will provide riders with new direct connections between Main Street in Buzzards Bay, Market Basket in Sagamore, the Sagamore Park and Ride, and Hyannis.
The Buzzards Bay Connector is one aspect of the transit authority’s overall efforts “to improve transit opportunities and access in the village of Buzzards Bay,” Mr. Cahir said. Last year, the transit authority received a $345,000 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, he said.
The funding allowed the authority “to tweak some of our existing Upper Cape service resulting in more efficient and timely transit service in and around the canal region,” Mr. Cahir said. The MassDOT funding was an opportunity to improve transit access and to “look at other exciting opportunities in Buzzards Bay,” he said.
“As a lifelong resident of Bourne, I am very familiar with the community and believe we can pursue and implement various initiatives that will significantly enhance the economic viability in the town of Bourne and at the same time create an improved and efficient transportation system,” Mr. Cahir said.
